Ti-6Al-4V ELI / Grade 23
ASTM F3001 explained for Grade 23 titanium parts
ASTM F3001 defines a powder bed fusion material and purchasing framework for Ti-6Al-4V ELI components. It does not replace part-specific requirements for function, delivered condition, critical features, inspection, testing, documentation, quantity, or delivery.

Select ELI because the controlled requirement calls for it, then define the complete process and evidence route.
The purchase requirement is for full-melt powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V ELI and the applicable F3001 revision supports the project basis.
Grade 23 is not automatically a drop-in replacement for Grade 5, wrought material, an approved implant material, or an application qualification.
Control powder, build, thermal processing, HIP where required, machining, surface condition, cleaning, inspection, tests, and records.
Material decision
Ti-6Al-4V ELI Grade 23 vs Grade 5
Grade 23 and Grade 5 belong to the Ti-6Al-4V family, but the material callout, chemistry limits, design basis, and qualification records are not interchangeable. Choose from the controlled requirement rather than the grade number alone.
| Decision | Grade 23 / ELI route | Grade 5 route |
|---|---|---|
| Material name | Ti-6Al-4V ELI, Grade 23, or Ti64 ELI | Ti-6Al-4V, Grade 5, Ti64, or TC4 family wording |
| AM specification commonly reviewed | ASTM F3001 for full-melt powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V ELI components | ASTM F2924 for full-melt powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V components |
| Selection basis | Tighter interstitial chemistry is required by the drawing, application, or qualification basis | Grade 5 chemistry and the project acceptance basis satisfy the structural requirement |
| What the name does not decide | Device approval, fatigue allowables, surface state, HIP, inspection, cleaning, or release evidence | Process equivalence to wrought material, fatigue allowables, surface state, HIP, or release evidence |
For the Grade 5 path, use the TC4 / Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 guide.
Specification scope
ASTM F3001 explained: what the specification controls
The current project must name the applicable revision. Do not rely on a supplier statement that simply says "meets ASTM" without mapping the purchase requirements and any supplementary requirements.
- Ordering basis
- Component classification, manufacturing plan, order information, supplementary requirements, and purchaser-producer responsibilities.
- Feedstock and process
- Powder feedstock, full-melt powder bed fusion route, process controls, and quality-program expectations.
- Material condition
- Chemical composition, microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal processing, and HIP provisions where applicable.
- Acceptance and release
- Dimensions, permissible variation, retests, inspection, rejection, certification, product marking, packaging, and records.

Important boundary
What F3001 does not prove by itself
Compliance with a material specification does not by itself establish part-specific fatigue life, fracture performance, pressure integrity, dimensional capability, internal cleanliness, biocompatibility, sterilization validation, or regulatory approval.
The acceptance plan must follow the actual failure modes and application. Surface condition, support contact, orientation, internal defects, machining, thermal route, and representative testing can matter as much as the alloy name.
For medical devices, the FDA technical considerations for additive manufactured medical devices describe broader design, manufacturing, and testing considerations. The device manufacturer and responsible regulatory organization retain those obligations.

Ask suppliers to quote the same Grade 23 part
Comparable quotes require the same delivered condition, evidence, and release scope. Otherwise one supplier may price a printed shape while another prices an accepted component.

Grade 23 FAQ
Questions before an ASTM F3001 purchase order
- What is ASTM F3001?
- ASTM F3001 is the standard specification for additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V ELI components produced by full-melt powder bed fusion. It provides a purchasing and production framework that includes ordering information, feedstock, manufacturing, chemistry, microstructure, mechanical properties, thermal processing, inspection, certification, and quality requirements.
- Is Ti-6Al-4V ELI the same as Grade 23?
- Grade 23 is the commonly used grade name for the extra-low-interstitial Ti-6Al-4V alloy route. The name alone is not a complete AM purchase requirement; the RFQ should state the governing specification revision, process, delivered condition, tests, and records.
- Is ASTM F3001 only for medical implants?
- No. ASTM F3001 is a material specification for powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V ELI components. Medical-device use introduces additional design controls, validation, biocompatibility, cleaning, sterilization, regulatory, and device-specific requirements that the material specification does not replace.
- Can Grade 23 replace Grade 5 automatically?
- No. The two routes have different chemistry requirements and may be tied to different design data, approved sources, thermal conditions, and qualification records. Substitution needs engineering and quality approval against the actual drawing and application basis.
- What should an ASTM F3001 RFQ include?
- Send CAD, a controlled drawing, the required F3001 revision, component classification or supplementary requirements where applicable, quantity, service conditions, critical features, thermal and HIP requirements, machining and finish, inspection, testing, traceability, and delivery needs.
