Grade 2 / TA2 / TA2G
Commercially pure titanium 3D printing for Grade 2 and TA2 parts
Grade 2, TA2, TA2G, and CP titanium are useful search and sourcing terms, but they are not a complete additive manufacturing specification. A quote must align the exact material definition with supplier capability, service media, delivered condition, inspection, and traceability.
Quick CP titanium additive manufacturing screen
The strongest candidate has a real geometry advantage, a documented material route, and an acceptance plan tied to the operating environment.
Corrosion behavior, ductility, chemistry limits, or a controlled unalloyed titanium requirement matters more than maximum structural strength.
The supplier supports the exact CP grade, powder route, parameter set, thermal condition, testing, machining, cleaning, and records required.
Standard plate, bar, tube, machining, or fabrication meets the geometry and evidence needs with less qualification and commercial risk.
Material definition
Grade 2, TA2, TA2G, and CP titanium are not interchangeable labels
A search term can start supplier discovery. A purchase order needs the exact designation, governing document, revision, chemistry, product form, manufacturing route, delivered condition, and acceptance evidence. This is especially important when a Chinese TA2 or TA2G callout is compared with an ASTM Grade 2 proposal.
| Term | What it communicates | What the RFQ must control |
|---|---|---|
| CP titanium | A family description for commercially pure titanium rather than one controlled grade. | State the exact grade, chemistry basis, product specification, AM route, and delivered condition. |
| Grade 2 / UNS R50400 | ASTM and UNS-oriented wording used for one commercially pure titanium grade. | Identify the applicable specification and product form; a wrought Grade 2 callout does not by itself control a powder bed fusion component. |
| TA2 / TA2G | Chinese-market sourcing language associated with commercially pure titanium definitions. | Cite the exact GB/T designation and revision required by the contract, then compare its chemistry and test basis with any proposed Grade 2 route. |
| Ti-6Al-4V / TC4 / Grade 5 | An aluminum- and vanadium-alloyed titanium family with a different chemistry and qualification basis. | Do not substitute it for CP titanium only because the supplier has a mature Ti-6Al-4V parameter set. |
The current GB/T 3620.1-2016 defines Chinese titanium designations and compositions. ASTM uses Grade 2 / UNS R50400 in product-form standards such as ASTM B348/B348M-25 for bars and billets. These sources support material-definition work; they do not establish automatic certificate equivalence or qualify an AM component.
Technical feasibility
Can Grade 2 titanium be made by LPBF?
Yes. Peer-reviewed studies have produced commercially pure Grade 2 titanium by laser powder bed fusion and examined how process parameters and heat treatment affect the resulting material. That establishes technical feasibility, not universal supplier capability or part qualification.
Procurement must ask for the supplier's controlled powder and parameter route, chemistry evidence, thermal condition, representative testing, surface state, and part-specific acceptance plan. Results from one machine, geometry, orientation, or research build are not universal design allowables.
Review the alloy family first with the titanium AM material selection guide. If the supplier proposes TC4 or Ti-6Al-4V instead, treat that as a material change requiring engineering and quality approval.
Make-or-buy decision
Grade 2 AM vs conventional titanium manufacturing
CP titanium does not make additive manufacturing the default. Use AM when the geometry and consolidated function justify a less common material route; use mill product, machining, forming, or fabrication when they satisfy the requirement more directly.
| Decision | Evidence favoring AM | Evidence favoring a conventional route |
|---|---|---|
| Geometry value | Consolidated ports, compact manifolds, internal flow paths, or features that remove joints and setups. | Simple plate, bar, tube, turned, milled, or welded geometry with established supply and inspection. |
| Material availability | A supplier has a controlled CP titanium powder, parameter, thermal, and test route for the required grade. | The AM supplier only offers Ti-6Al-4V or cannot document the proposed CP titanium condition. |
| Internal access | Powder escape, cleaning, inspection, flow, and leak testing are designed into the channels. | Sealed cavities, trapped powder, inaccessible supports, or uninspectable contamination risks remain. |
| Acceptance basis | Chemistry, witness testing, dimensions, surface, leak or pressure tests, and traceability are defined. | The drawing cites a wrought specification but provides no AM process or acceptance requirements. |
| Commercial case | Low-to-medium quantities justify DfAM, process development, post-processing, and evidence costs. | Commodity geometry or volume economics favor standard mill product, machining, forming, or fabrication. |
Application fit
Where a CP titanium AM review can be useful
Candidate parts include compact process-development manifolds, sensor housings, sample blocks, corrosion test fixtures, and low-volume flow hardware where CP titanium is already justified by the service environment and AM can remove joints or integrate otherwise difficult passages.
For chloride-bearing water and brine, use the seawater and desalination engineering guide. For acids, oxidizers, cleaning solutions, and pilot manifolds, use the chemical processing and water treatment guide. Neither page replaces application-specific corrosion review.
Internal channels need powder escape, support avoidance, cleaning access, CT or flow-test planning, and leak or pressure acceptance. Review the internal-channel and powder-removal guide before releasing a sealed CP titanium geometry for quote.
Specification boundary
Wrought Grade 2 standards do not automatically control AM parts
ASTM B265-25 applies to titanium strip, sheet, and plate. ASTM B348/B348M-25 applies to bars and billets. Their mill-product requirements can inform a project, but neither one alone defines powder, recoating, build parameters, orientation, thermal processing, support removal, surface state, or AM component testing.
ASTM F67-24 covers four grades of unalloyed titanium mill products used for surgical implant manufacture. It is not an AM process specification and does not establish finished-device approval.
When no directly applicable AM component standard exists, purchaser and supplier need a controlled project specification covering feedstock, process controls, test locations and orientation, thermal condition, machining and surface state, inspection, records, nonconformance handling, and release authority.

What to send for a Grade 2 or TA2 titanium 3D printing quote
Comparable quotes require the same material definition, delivered state, acceptance evidence, and commercial scope. A material name and STEP file are not enough.
- 1Controlled definitionSTEP or native CAD, controlled drawing, part number, revision, units, datums, and design authority.
- 2Material requirementExact Grade 2, TA2, TA2G, or customer designation; specification revision; chemistry; and whether alternatives may be proposed.

What the sources establish
GB/T 3620.1-2016 establishes Chinese titanium designation and composition terminology. ASTM B348/B348M-25, ASTM B265-25, and ASTM F67-24 establish requirements for defined mill-product forms and uses. They help control material identity but do not qualify a powder bed fusion process or finished AM part.
The open-access study Laser Powder Bed Fusion of Pure Titanium: Optimization of Processing Parameters and the 2024 study A roadmap for tailoring additively manufactured commercially pure titanium support CP Grade 2 LPBF feasibility and the importance of process and heat treatment. They do not provide universal design allowables or supplier qualification.
Grade 2 and TA2 FAQ
Questions before a CP titanium AM purchase order
- Is TA2 the same as Grade 2 titanium?
- They are often discussed as comparable commercially pure titanium sourcing routes, but the names are not a certificate-level equivalence statement. Compare the cited GB/T and ASTM or customer specifications, chemistry limits, product form, test methods, heat history, and AM acceptance basis before approving a substitution.
- Can Grade 2 commercially pure titanium be 3D printed?
- Peer-reviewed work has demonstrated laser powder bed fusion of commercially pure Grade 2 titanium. That establishes technical feasibility, not universal supplier capability or part qualification. The RFQ must confirm powder, parameter, build, thermal processing, test, and traceability controls.
- Is Grade 2 always more corrosion resistant than Ti-6Al-4V?
- No universal ranking applies to every chemical, concentration, temperature, pressure, crevice, galvanic couple, or surface condition. Select the material from application-specific compatibility evidence and define the delivered surface and cleaning condition.
- Which ASTM standard controls a Grade 2 AM part?
- No wrought Grade 2 callout automatically controls an AM component. ASTM B348/B348M covers bars and billets, while ASTM B265 covers sheet and plate. An AM purchase needs a project-specific component, process, testing, and acceptance basis in addition to the chemistry target.
- Does ASTM F67 make a printed Grade 2 part an approved implant?
- No. ASTM F67 covers unalloyed titanium mill-product forms for surgical implant manufacture. It does not qualify a powder bed fusion process, validate a finished device, establish biocompatibility or sterilization, or provide regulatory approval.
